Pelvi-Ureteric junction (PUJ) obstruction

(or Uretero-Pelvic junction or UPJ obstruction) is a condition that patients are born with called congenital UPJ obstruction. It normally presents or causes trouble in infancy. Nevertheless, it may not cause problems until adulthood.

It cause pain in the kidney which is felt in the side (flank pain) particularly after drinking alcohol. Untreated blockage may lead to kind damage, and ultimately complete destruction of the kidney.

It is commonly associated with a branch of the renal artery that crosses the Uretero-pelvic junction causing kinking of the ureter at that point.
